IMS : The next target of Indian IT Industry

IT NEWS

Infrastructure Management Services (IMS) is becoming the next lucrative vertical for Indian IT despite the economic slowdown. The remote IMS business out of India currently stands at $200-300 million, but has a market potential of $55 billion globally, according to Nasscom.Datacenter outsourcing, network management, IT security outsourcing, telecom and application monitoring and management fall under the horizon of IMS. In India, all IT firms have hopped on to the IMS bandwagon as it gives an edge to firms in Europe or U.S. planning to save up to 60 percent costs in their IT management, reported The Economic Times.

Several data centres in U.S, UK, France or China are being monitored and maintained by Indian engineers out of Noida, Bangalore, Gurgaon and Chennai. Mohan Murthy, Director, HP Tech labs, Bangalore said, “We have the capability of monitoring, shutting down and fixing bugs in the servers by remote login from our home or any part of the world. Only in cases of a loose wire fault or physical damage do we need a human being. The need for lesser number of people saves a lot of cost and thus makes it an attractive offering for clients.”

Remote Infrastructure Management (RIM), a part of the IMS which Nasscom estimates to have a market potential of $150 billion, of this about 70-75 percent of infrastructure management roles can be off-shored and India stands at an opportunity to realise $26-28 billion of this by 2013 with a CAGR (combined aggregate growth rate) of over 30 percent. On the other hand, Forrester estimates IMS to have a market size of $111 billion and Gartner $80 billion.

All Indian IT majors have strong plans to enter the Tech IMS space. Wipro acquired Infocrossing for $600 million and expects it to give a strong boost to its plans to capture leadership in the IMS space. Infosys, Mindtree, HP, Patni have also set up IMS divisions.

Geospatial Technology : A key to Counter terrorism

Computer Science, Recent News
Through PTI

Indian security forces need to effectively implement and use geospatial technology for targeted counter-terrorism operations, as it provides 3D imagery of a conflict area and can eventually help in saving lives, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said here Monday.

“With geospatial technology, our forces could have had a three-dimensional view of say the Taj hotel and how to access each room,” said Sibal, referring to the recent terror attack in Mumbai, including on the sea-facing Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, that left around 170 people dead.

“You can get such information even on mobile phones. And with other operational devices like night-vision, security forces could have easily located the enemy. Such technology is already available,” he told a seminar on geospatial technologies in India, jointly organised by National Spatial Data Infrastructure and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Geospatial technology uses global positioning system, geographical information system and remote sensing to map physical attributes of targeted areas, resulting in a three-dimensional image, useful for civilian applications like town planning or strategic operations such as counter-terrorism.

“Now the security agencies are waking up to the uses of this kind of technology but to put it to effective use, the defence ministry’s permission is required,” Sibal said, referring to the need for aerial mapping of sensitive areas.

“For three and a half years now we have been trying the ministry of defence and other agencies to cooperate in the mapping of various areas, which is crucial for this kind of technology to be effective,” he added.

Geospatial technology is also effective in tightening maritime security, for example along the route that terrorists took to infiltrate India during the attacks on Mumbai. Explained Sibal: “With access to such technology, it is possible to identify every vessel that enters our waters making our coast lines that much more secure.”

Talking to reporters on the sidelines, Sibal also said the government plans to put together a legislation that will give more clarity on geospatial technology, which is touted to be the next big thing after information technology.

Some unknown facts about Windows XP – the best OS

Computer Science, Rishav's Personal, Software Review, Tips an Tricks

You would had read many reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it’s time to dive a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP’s secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.

9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

20. The next release of Windows XP, codenamed Longhorn, is due out late next year or early 2003 and won’t be much to write home about. The next big release is codenamed Blackcomb and will be out in 2003/2004.

Just a few mouse clicks and your computer can even become as good as a brand new computer. You nee not be an expert in Computers to o it.

WiseCleaner has released Wise Registry Cleaner v. 3.82 and Wise Disk Cleaner v. 3.74, a pair of affordable Windows applications that stabilize your computer, make it run more quickly and reclaim a large mumbers of disk space. Although its not free, its worth buying.

Wise Registry Cleaner speeds up user’s computer by cleaning Windows Registry. The Registry is at the heart of every Windows computer. Each time users install new software, information is added to the Registry.

Few uninstall programs remove this information properly or completely. So, over time, as users install and uninstall software, the Registry accumulates junk files, and user’s computer’s performance suffers.

Do you have a Windows PC with a system disk that is nearing capacity? Or do you just want to reclaim some disk space on your hard drive? If so, the tool below will help you to free up disk space on your busy hard drive with one click. Its better than the Windows Disk Manager.

Any untrained user can simply run Wise Disk Cleaner to keep their hard drive running more efficiently. Power users can customize the program’s list of junk files, and save even more hard drive space. Instead of sending deleted files to the recycle bin, the program can compress these files and save them to a special directory, allowing users to restore files in the future if users find that they really need them.

The latest version of Wise Disk Cleaner contains additional advanced customization options that let users fine-tune cleanup operations.

Holiday Smash : Review of Wireless Routers

Hardware Review, Rishav's Personal

If you want to take advantage of holiday deals to upgrade your own network, there are plenty of worthy products that are great for staying connected. Here are four solid ones to consider.

802.11g Router

Linksys WRT110 RangePlus Wireless Router
Though the spec hasn’t been officially ratified yet, 802.11n is far enough along that you should go that route for a brand-new networks, but if it’s still too pricey, the WRT110 RangePlus Wireless Router can provide some of the N benefits with a cheaper 802.11g router. If you happen to have an 802.11n adapter, this Linksys uses RangePlus technology to provide throughout and range superior to other G hardware; even if you just have a 802.11g network, the WRT110 delivers outstanding range. The sleek design, which does away with external antennae, is another plus.

802.11n Router (Single Band)

Belkin N+ Wireless Router
This Belkin router taps into the full power of 802.11n, delivering unsurpassed range and awesome throughput, at a price that isn’t much more than the cheapest N routers available. It isn’t the sexiest router out there, and it only works on the 2.4GHz band that most other Wi-Fi networks (and other devices like cordless phones) use, but that may not matter to you if you just want a fast network that can cover as much ground as possible.

802.11n Router (Dual Band)

Linksys WRT610N Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router
Unlike the Belkin N+, the WRT610N can send a wireless signal over either the 2.4GHz or the less-crowded 5GHz spectrum. In fact, as its lengthy name suggests, it can transmit over both bands at the same time. The 5GHz promises better performance if you have a compatible adapter, while you can use the 2.4GHz band for legacy Wi-Fi equipment. Better still, it delivers NAS functionality when you attach an external drive to its USB port. And as with the Linksys WRT110, the WRT610N comes in a slick black housing that stores its antennae internally.

Mobile Router

Synet Windy31 USB Wireless Router
Travelers will appreciate the Windy31, which, when plugged into your laptop, can serve as a standard 802.11b/g wireless adapter or as a miniature router that can share a Wi-Fi signal with up to 31 different devices. That means you can connect to a hotel’s high-speed Internet service using the Windy31, then sit on your bed with your iPhone or Nintendo DS and make use of its Wi-Fi features. The Windy31 doesn’t come with extensive bells and whistles (no VPN capabilities or built-in firewall), but it offers the usual encryption options and, of course, the convenience of a mobile hub whenever you need to share a wireless connection on the go.

So Buy any of the Wireless Routers this holiday season, change your digital experience with laptop/desktop.

Software Review : ObjectDock 1.9 – MAC experience in Windows

Rishav's Personal, Software Review
A view Of Object Dock

A view Of Object Dock

Jealous of that slick Mac interface? Check out ObjectDock, a free utility that replaces the Windows Taskbar with a colorful, animated dock similar to the taskbar in Mac OS X.

ObjectDock acts both as a task manager and a program launcher. Users can customize the look of each item on the dock and set various animation options for when the mouse rolls over an item on the dock. The program is very easy to configure. Version 1.9 adds Windows Vista DWM support, new skins, minimize/maximize effects, and a new weather docklet.

Another View of Object Dock

Another View of Object Dock

ObjectDock displays icons for currently running applications and can hold quick-launch icons for your favorite programs. As you pass the cursor over each icon, ObjectDock magnifies it and displays relevant information, helping you find what you need even when you’re running several programs at once. An attractive clock rounds out the toolbar. The tiny utility comes with a dozen attractive skins, and users with slow computers can reduce the animation quality to increase speed.

There is one major drawback: the lack of a system tray. There is a free, imperfect docklet plug-in available from a third-party provider that valiantly tries to remedy the problem, although it’s a bit buggy. You can also upgrade to the Plus edition for $20, which includes system tray support, tabbed docks, support for multiple docks and multiple monitors, and other features.

If you’re dissatisfied with the Windows Taskbar or just want to spice up your Desktop, ObjectDock makes a very good, no-risk choice.

Some popular browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Opera. To an extent, they all work the same way because they follow the same set of rules.
