Google’s Android G2 makes its Presence on Internet

IT NEWS, Software Review

The G2, as phone is being called now, has shed a few grams in weight and is a whole lot thinner, thanks to the lack of a slide-put keyboard.

Folks over at Gizmodo have managed to scoop upon quite a few images from their “source”. The images show a phone bearing striking resemblance to the T-Mobile G1, minus the slide out keyboard. The back of the device sports a 3.2 megapixel camera, similar to the existing G1. It remains to be seen if there are any noticeable difference in the OS – although it looked somewhat similar to the G1.

The G2, as phone is being called now, has definitely shed a few grams in weight and is a whole lot thinner, thanks to the lack of a slide-put keyboard. No further details are available as of now. Additionally, let me remind that this is as of now just a rumor –although the photographs do look authentic.

Let us hope at least this one makes it to India as soon as it is launched unlike the G1, which we are still awaiting.

Reducing the Electricity Usage in the Datacenters

Computer Science, IT NEWS, Rishav's Personal

In the past, it would have been considered ridiculous for somebody to say that datacenters should be moved to polar regions to be kept cool. But today, with the size and magnitude of computing increasing explosively, such options are vehemently considered for future datacenter needs. As almost 50 percent of the power that reached a datacenter is consumed for cooling the device, a control on this will help reduce the energy consumption significantly, especially as the industry is talking about green IT with an unprecedented enthusiasm.

Experts suggest that massive measures have to be taken to cut down electric power, which is needed for cooling these data centers.

According to Ramkumar Kothandaraman, Director of Microsoft Technology Center, an option is to utilize gifts of nature like wind chilling seasons. While participating in a panel discussion at Great CIO conference in Bangalore, he referred to Microsoft’s datacenter in Chicago that lets cold wind inside to cool the device and does not consume any amount of energy for its cooling purpose.

Earlier, San Francisco based Advanced Data Centers, an owner and operator of datacenters, had announced that it had opened a 41,000 square foot datacenter outside Sacramento, where the nights are cool, and hence help chill the device.

ADC’s McClellan datacenter, a 15-foot high, 100-foot long section of the datacenter lets outside air into the device to cool it when the temperature conditions are right. And because of the temperate weather in the Sacramento area, outside air can cool this datacenter 75 percent of the time.

Another technology advancement that has already happened in this area is a fusion of sensor networks and virtualization that helps keep several datacenters connected to each other. The system also facilitates a communication between datacenters in the network. The sensors installed around each datacenter grasp signals when a device in a network over heats, and then they send signals to stop processes in that device and shift all its computing activities to another datacenter that remains cool in the same network. Such timely interventions by sensors make sure that no datacenter ‘massively’ consumes electricity to cool it.

Consider Jammu and Kashmir, the northern state of the Indian union with two capitals. The state activities are based in Jammu during winter and in Srinagar during summer due to extreme temperature variations. This means even inhabited regions of India have such extreme temperature variations. So, why can’t we utilize the geographical features of the country to green the IT sector by setting up datacenters in different areas and keep them networked, and thereby keep on shifting computing processes to one after the other devices as weather varies?

The Most vulnerable Virus affects 6.5mn Computers Worldwide

IT NEWS, Recent News, Rishav's Personal, Uncategorized

A computer virus attack that has infected more than 6.5 million Windows PCs this week is one of the worst in years, internet security firm F-Secure said Friday.

In total the worm, which is known as Downadup or Conficker, has infected nearly nine million PCs since its first version was unleashed two years ago.

“The number of Downadup infections (is) skyrocketing,” Toni Koivunen, an F-Secure researcher, said in an entry to the company’s security lab blog. “From an estimated 2.4 million infected machines to over 8.9 million during the last four days. That’s just amazing.”

Computer users have little to fear if they keep their computers patched with the latest Microsoft security fixes, but Microsoft says that at least one third of PCs have not yet been updated.

“We haven’t seen outbreaks of this scale in many years,” the company’s lead researcher Mikko Hypponen told ComputerWorld.com.

Microsoft says the worm exploits a bug in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008.

The worm works by searching for a Windows executable file called “services.exe” and then becomes part of that code. Once it’s embedded in a PC, Downadup generates a list of possible domains, selects one, then uses that domain to reach a malicious server from which it downloads additional malware to install on the hijacked computer.

The latest version of the virus is particularly nasty since it uses a complicated algorithm to create hundreds of new domains, making it much harder for security experts to shut it down.

Yahoo Launches Messenger 9

IT NEWS, Software Review

Yahoo Messenger 9.0 became available on Tuesday for Windows XP–a week after Yahoo’s target launch date and interestingly, a week after Microsoft released its beta update of Windows Live Messenger. Yahoo Messenger 9.0 as dramatic an update of its instant messenger as Windows Live beta is of Windows Live Messenger 8.5, and it introduces some pleasant improvements over version 8.1 that will satisfy Yahoo loyalists. Among them are a redesigned interface with more skins, more space, and the excellent ability to see scaled public images and videos in the chat window.

If you’re familiar with the beta version of Yahoo Messenger 9.0, this final build adds more conspicuous spam alerts and the ability to chat with friends directly from their Web site or online profile page. I will discuss both later on in this review.

Interface

A bolder, more spread-out display graces Yahoo Messenger 9.0, complete with larger avatar thumbnails and room to read a contact’s status message. Also new, Yahoo now updates your status with your recent activity on Yahoo’s Buzz, Avatars, 360, or MyBlogLog–for example, when you change your avatar’s outfit. Those who can’t get used to the new spacing can revert to the familiar compact view.

Yahoo Messenger Interface

Yahoo Messenger Interface

Yahoo Messenger Interface

A visual picker makes previewing and switching skins nearly automatic.
Importing contacts by bulk from a wide array of services is another biggie feature that makes its debut in Yahoo Messenger 9.0. The importer, operated by TrueSwitch, scours your other IM, e-mail, and social networking accounts–including Gmail and Facebook–for friends that are also signed up on Yahoo IM. TrueSwitch will send requests on your behalf for friends to add you to their Messenger accounts, and you’ll have the option of inviting your unaffiliated contacts to join up with Yahoo.

Other changes include new skins, including a dark theme, which you’ll find by clicking the button to the right of the Messenger logo. Windows Live Messenger beta took skins a step further with themes that incorporate background images; while some Windows Live scenes are very nice, Yahoo’s visual picker saves you an extra step when choosing a new look.

Like Windows Live Messenger beta, Yahoo Messenger’s contact search bar finds buddies quickly by checking your IM list and your Yahoo address book. In another similarity, Yahoo Messenger’s status field supports emoticons and links. Finally, Yahoo Messenger 9.0 highlights power users with an icon of a medal or crown placed next to their name (your choice) and rewards them with more avatar accessories and priority customer care.

Chat window

The Yahoo Messenger 9.0 chat window looks a little more airbrushed than in version 8.1, but the biggest difference is also the best–a feature that embeds scaled maps, images, video players, and public photos when you or a friend drops in a link ending in .jpg, .gif, .png, or .bmp.

Yahoo Messenger Chat Window

Yahoo Messenger Chat Window

Being able to comment on photos and watch YouTube videos without leaving the IM window is a treat, and something no other instant messaging client currently offers. While Windows Live Messenger beta can boast about its fun feature for mapping certain profile pictures to common emoticons (like happy, sad, and winking), being able to reference your IM window when you’re chatting about a photo or video is more useful overall.
Yahoo Messenger 9.0 can embed videos and image URLs directly into the chat window. If you’re a fan of emoticons, Yahoo’s new Messenger 9.0 adds six new expressions to version 8.1’s gallery, including a smiling head giving a thumbs-up and a little guy rocking out. Yahoo has heeded the advice of beta testers and stopped using dime-size emoticons that, while easier to see, were also less defined around the edges. Although we also prefer the traditional smiley faces, as long as Yahoo has that gallery of larger images on hand, the emoticons’ display size ought to be the user’s choice. The behavior of Yahoo Messenger’s IM window otherwise remains the same.

Spam control

IMers plagued with spam messages (also called spim) will appreciate some small alterations in 9.0. The warning message on a conversation window is bolder, for one, and Yahoo has added a button to the offline message window that lets you report the impostor message without having to leave Yahoo Messenger.

Pingbox is a Yahoo chat window embedded into a personal site or profile.Pingbox is a brand-new feature in Yahoo Messenger that lets Web site owners and visitors chat in real time. If you’re a blogger, eBay seller, or social networking buff, you can embed a Yahoo Pingbox chat window into your page to chat with visitors to your site in real time. The visitor sees the chat window on your site and you see conversation windows when you’re logged on to Yahoo Messenger. We can see how this could be beneficial for users who want to engage a Web site owner on the fly, especially if chatting means you’re not waiting around for an e-mail. Thankfully, the service is opt-in for visitors, who need to make the first move before the Pingbox owner sees their presence.

Ping Box

Ping Box

On the owner’s end, Pingboxes are highly customizable, with controls for the message window’s look, for broadcasting a welcome message, and for shutting off any or all communication features if visitors’ pings grow too overwhelming. While chatting with site visitors isn’t new, Yahoo has definitely brought weight to the service with their online Pingbox creation wizard.

Yahoo Messenger 9.0 has one or two rough edges, the same niggles we’ve had about previous versions–the heavy advertising of other Yahoo services and the bundled Yahoo Toolbar. However, these are small complaints compared to the high quality of the chat app. The visual improvements and the ability to share multimedia within the chat screen are no-brainer reasons to upgrade.

Your web Searches harm Envoirnment a lot

Computer Science, IT NEWS

Though technology has greatly contributed to the advancement of human life, the same badly impacts the environment. The case is not different in terms of website search also as a single Google search generates about 7 g of carbon dioxide. As more than 200 million people are estimated to search internet everyday, the effect would be serious as it increases electricity consumption and green house gas emission.”Google operates huge data centers around the world that consume a great deal of power and Google search has a definite impact on environment,” opined Alex Wissner, a Harvard University physicist, whose is about to conclude a research on the environmental impact of computing.

However, Google is keeping silent about its energy consumption and carbon footprint. The locations of dozens of its data centers are also unknown.

According to a recent Gartner study, the global IT industry generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines, which is about two percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. “Data centers are among the most energy-intensive facilities imaginable,” said Evan Mills, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California.

Google’s search engines generate high levels of carbon dioxide because of the way it operates. For instance, when we type something in a Google search for information, our request doesn’t go to just one server, instead it goes several ones competing against each other. Google takes data from whichever products that answer fastest. Though the system minimizes delay, it increases energy consumption. Google has servers in U.S., Europe, Japan and china.

As per the Mills’ research, viewing a simple website page generates about 0.02 g of carbon dioxide per second. This rises about tenfold to about 0.2g of carbon dioxide a second when viewing a website with complex images, animations or videos.

Increase your cable modem or DSL speed in XP

Computer Science, Tips an Tricks

This tweak is for broad band cable connections on stand alone machines with winXP professional version – might work on Home version also. It will probably work with networked machines as well but I haven’t tried it in that configuration. This is for windows XP only, it does not work on win2000.
I use 3 Com cards so I don’t know how it works on others at this point. It does not involve editing the registry. This tweak assumes that you have let winXP create a connection on install for your cable modem/NIC combination and that your connection has tcp/ip – QoS – file and print sharing – and client for microsoft networks , only, installed. It also assumes that winxp will detect your NIC and has in-box drivers for it. If it doesn’t do not try this.
In the “My Network Places” properties (right click on the desktop icon and choose properties), highlight the connection then at the menu bar choose “Advanced” then “Advanced Settings”. Uncheck the two boxes in the lower half for the bindings for File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks. Click OK

  1. From the windows XP cd in the support directory from the support cab, extract the file netcap.exe and place it in a directory on your hard drive or even in the root of your C:\ drive.
  2. next, open up a command prompt window and change directories to where you put netcap.exe. then type “netcap/?”. It will list some commands that are available for netcap and a netmon driver will be installed. At the bottom you will see your adapters. You should see two of them if using a 3Com card. One will be for LAN and the other will be for WAN something or other.
  3. Next type “netcap/Remove”. This will remove the netmon driver.
  4. Open up control panel / system / dev man and look at your network adapters. You should now see two of them and one will have a yellow ! on it. Right click on the one without the yellow ! and choose uninstall. YES! you are uninstalling your network adapter, continue with the uninstall. Do not restart yet.
  5. Check your connection properties to make sure that no connection exists. If you get a wizard just cancel out of it.
  6. Now re-start the machine.
  7. After re-start go to your connection properties again and you should have a new connection called “Local area connection 2″. highlight the connection then at the menu bar choose “Advanced” then “Advanced Settings”. Uncheck the two boxes in the lower half for the bindings for File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks. Click OK.
  8. Choose connection properties and uncheck the “QOS” box
  9. Re-start the machine
  10. after restart enjoy the increased responsivness of IE, faster page loading, and a connection speed boost.

Why it works, it seems that windows XP, in its zeal to make sure every base is covered installs two seperate versions of the NIC card. One you do not normally see in any properties. Remember the “netcap/?” command above showing two different adapters? The LAN one is the one you see. The invisible one loads everything down and its like your running two separate cards together, sharing a connection among two cards, this method breaks this “bond” and allows the NIC to run un-hindered.

India not yet used to Online Advertising

IT NEWS

A country, whose internet subscriber base has reached at about 50 million including 5.25 million users having broadband access, and 350 million people have a mobile phone in hand, a good number of them equipped with latest technologies, still showing less interest in spending money to reach people online. Only one to one-and-half percent of the total advertising spend is presently going to online advertising segment in India, while U.S. and U.K are spending eight to nine percent and six to eight percent respectively.

“With the next generation communication applications like WiMaX and Web 3.0 are all set to make their impact in Indian market, the country is showing great potential in online advertising scenario,” said Viraj Malik, CEO, Percept Knorigin, an online internet advertising agency. “Advertising practice in India is inefficient today, almost 98 percent spend does not have accountability,” Malik opined. According to him, the money spend in the online marketing segment in India is expected to increase by three to four percent in three years.

Malik urges the online advertising agencies to come up with innovative applications to exploit the high potential in the segment, highlighting the Google’s introduction of text advertisement. “Entrepreneurs who are about to put feet in this segment should have innovative thoughts to deal with the users in the country, who spend about six hours with internet in a week,” he added.

Cloud Computing : Not a Success in India

IT NEWS

The buzz of the clouds does not bear a real impact as firms are yet to incline towards cloud computing in India. “Despite a $1 billion market to address for cloud computing in the country, the penetration of it is too poor,” said Kiran Datar, Managing Director, Cisco, Webex Technology.

The system of legacy that guides many firms while developing the infrastructure, has kept back many from opting for those available on the clouds. Moreover, there are the insecurities amongst firms that hinder them to be a full-fledged cloud computing client. “Companies do not like to put their datas on the web as they are not sure about the privacy,” said Kishen Manjunath, Principal Scientist, Honeywell. Apart from the security systems, the bandwidth catastrophe in the country completely wipes off the possibility of a complete inclination towards the clouds.

Top executives, who gathered at the Headstart compute 2009 were of the view that the solution to the varied problems concerning the clouds are yet to be found. The pioneer of cloud computing, Amazon still lingers in the market with a very meager client base. Though many corporate firms have evolved with cloud computing like Microsoft and IBM, yet there is no significant shift towards its adoption.

Still there is a hope that this computing phenomena will mature to lure in the industry. “We hope that we will see full-fledged solutions in the clouds which will enable high performance computing,” said Sunil, Sherlekar, Director, Computational Research Laboratory, TCS. So, the software vendors are yet cautious about future developments in the clouds, since it lowers the investment part while the scalability of the infrastructure is high. “The basic challenge that will come up if cloud computing becomes the norm of the day, is to retain existing clients and tap new ones,” said PN Anantharaman, Director, Adobe.
